Expelled Moriscos contracted typhus en route across winter Castile

Evidence

In what state did these people arrive in ´Avila? In other towns there is precise information to the effect that, during the journey, as a result of the hardships they had endured, many contracted typhus. This happened with the people sent to C´aceres. According to the administrators in Burgos, it also happened in Toledo, Palencia, and Salamanca. Tapia suggests that since those arriving in ´Avila had traveled through Toledo, they too were probably infected, but that the city authorities suppressed the information for fear of having the whole city placed in quarantine. At all events, we have the report that “there are many sick people, and many are dying of so much snow and cold, which have been excessive” (Tapia 1991, 150). — L. P.
