Expelled Morisco ships carried secreted wealth worth hundreds of thousands of crowns
Evidence
Pirates would not be put off by the knowledge that most of the passengers in a ship full of refugees would be mere impoverished outcasts; there was a good chance there would be among them a few rich men with as much wealth secreted in their effects as possible. Pesciolini, an agent of the Medici, reporting to his masters at home on departures from Marseilles, speaks of a ship setting out from that port for Constantinople carrying wealthy Moriscos, among them one “Lopez Estalavella,” and merchandise to the value of 350,000 crowns (Temimi 1993, 57, doc. no. 15). — L.
