Excitation pattern differences grow with filter frequency, favoring the high-frequency edge

Evidence

At 1000 Hz, the difference between the two excitation patterns is about 4 dB. However, as the auditory filter center frequency increases, the difference between the two excitation patterns also increases. The excitation pattern associated with the higherlevel stimulus has a greater spread of excitation, and due to upward spread of excitation, the spread of excitation is most pronounced on the high frequency side. As an illustration, the high frequency edge of the excitation pattern corresponding to 2250 Hz represents an excitation difference of about 8 dB. — Jennifer Lentz, Psychoacoustics- Perception of Normal…, 829
