Everyday harassment failing to force black homebuyers out escalated whites toward lethal violence.
Evidence
The first week of June, a Klansman reported that a black man had moved into a house between two white homes on Sunset Avenue, only one block over from the “black side” of Ashby Street. Neighboring whites had whipped the man and torn the windows out from his house, but he still refused to leave. Now, “it looked like they would have to kill him in order to get rid of him.” Likewise, at a July meeting, Klansmen heard about a white man on Ashby who had tried to dynamite a black family from the house next door only to wind up in a gunfight with the man. As they learned of further “outrages” around Ashby Street, the Klansmen called for more extreme measures. One recommended that “whenever they learned of a house being advertised for sale to the negroes that they go out and burn the thing down.” — Kevin M. Kruse, White Flight, 126
