Even the King Center frames King as a color-blind reformer
Evidence
Even the website of the King Center makes use of this view of Dr. King: “The King Holiday honors the life and contributions of America’s greatest champion of racial justice and equality, the leader who not only dreamed of a color-blind society, but who also led a movement that achieved historic reforms to help make it a reality.” Here color-blindness demands that we forget the unfinished business of the past in the promise that such forgetting will make for us a more just society. We are to remember Dr. King, and the movement he represented, as a sentimentalized proponent of nonviolence and total love. That’s all. The other stuff gets tossed in the trash bin, discarded bits of willfully forgotten history. — Eddie S. Glaude Jr., Democracy in Black, 281
