Ethiopian raids on Lugh drove Italy to press for frontier definition
Evidence
In 1905, an Ethiopian force descended down the valley of the Shebelle, raiding and pillaging as far south as Balad near the coast which was then not yet occupied by the Italians. Two years later, after an Ethiopian military party had been forced by the Dervishes to retreat in the Ogaden, a second and stronger expedition was sent out, which, failing to engage its elusive foes, turned south to descend on Lugh, raiding livestock and annihilating the Italian garrison. Seriously alarmed at the situation, the Italian government requested reparations, which were duly made, and then took advantage of the position to press the Ethiopians for a definition of the frontier. — I.M.
