Ethiopian-backed Rahanweyn militias formed a warlord coalition rivaling the TNG in 2001
Evidence
Indeed, in March 2001 the principal warlords established a rival coalition in the shape of the Somali Reconciliation and Restoration Council. This organization had its headquarters amongst the Rahanweyn agro-pastoralists at Baidoa, which, with Ethiopian help, had recently been liberated from ‘Aideed’s (Habar Gidir) control, by the Rahanweyn Resistance Army, a local militia formed in 1995. Its colourful commander, Hassan Muhammad Nur, was known as ‘Red Shirt’, recalling the romantic image of the famous Italian freedom fighter, Garibaldi. — I.M. Lewis, I. M.
