Entering a mosque to denounce Muhammad disallowed entry became the Franciscan martyrdom template

Evidence

The five friars, disguised as laymen, went first to Seville (which was still Muslim); there they put on their Franciscan habits and “zealous in spirit, went to the principal mosque [myzquitam], which is their [the Saracens’] temple… . When they wished to enter, the Saracens, indignant, prevented them—with shouts, pushing and beating—from entering the mosque. For their law (institutio) is this: that no Christian, nor anyone else of a [non-Muslim] sect, is permitted to enter their temple.” The Muslims took the friars to the “king” of Seville, whom the friars urged to convert, saying “many bad things about Muhammad and his damnable law.” — John V. Tolan, Saracens, 1103
