Employer job design primarily protects class position through profitability
Evidence
We have argued that the overriding objective of employers in organizing production and assigning workers to occupational slots is the perpetutation or enhancement of their class standing. The necessary condi tion for this is the profitability of the enterprise. Profitability, in turn, is sought through the complementary, but far from identical, strategies of efficiency and control. — Samuel Bowles and Herbert Gintis, Schooling in Capitalist America, 890
