Elite silence follows the ideal of value-free rational professionalism
Evidence
The process of separation was accompanied by a deafening silence of all established and organized elites of German society – all those who could, theoretically, raise their voices against the impending disaster and make them heard. One can surmise that part of the reason was a broad sympathy with the master plan of the Entfernung of a nation and a culture seen for various reasons as foreign and undesirable. This was not, however, the whole reason, and perhaps not even its most fateful part. The capture of state power by the Nazis did not change the rules of professional conduct; the latter remained loyal as it had been since before the dawn of the modern era, to the principle of the moral neutrality of reason and the pursuit of rationality, which brooks no compromise with factors unrelated to the technical success of the enterprise. German universities, like their counterparts in other modern countries, carefully cultivated the ideal of science as an emphatically value-free activity; they bestowed upon their wards the right and the duty to serve the ‘interests of knowledge’ and to brush aside other interests with which the welfare of scientific pursuits might clash. Once one remembers this, then the silence, and even the keen co-operation of German scientific institutions in the implementation of Nazi tasks, loses much of its shocking power. — Zygmunt Bauman, Modernity and the Holocaust, 356

- DEEPTHINKING: The claim that modernity’s own value-free rationality—not just antisemitism—neutralizes ethical resistance is a paradigm-level reworking of how mass atrocity becomes ordinary.
