Election winners switched to the ruling party seeking cash and office rewards.

Evidence

Even before the dust settled and the new parliament was seated, nearly all the independent and non-SYL winners immediately switched allegiance and joined the ruling party. In addition, the most critical opposition party, the DAP, lost two of its new MPs who had the faint hope of gaining personal rewards from the regime. Sharmarkee reappointed Egal to form a government, and the mad rush to Egal’s residence ensued. The new government became even larger than the previous one, and cash rewards were sought by MPs to pay their election expenses. — Abdi Ismail Samatar, Africa’s First Democrats, 1026
