Egyptian army logistics failed chronically, leaving soldiers without winter clothes
Evidence
Moreover, besides the bad quality of supplies sent to the army, there were also constant complaints of untimely deliveries. In the summer of 1832, for example, when it started to become obvious that the troops might have to spend the winter in Syria and that they were not equipped to face the cold weather, Ibrahim Pasha wrote to the authorities in Egypt requesting the dispatch of proper winter clothes. By December, however, the clothes had still not arrived and the soldiers had to use carpets as coats to protect them from the cold Anatolian winter that they were not accustomed to, and Mehmed Ali was still writing to the Director of the War Department urging him to send the winter clothes that his son had been requesting since the previous summer. In the event, and because of inadequate clothing, some soldiers could not stand the cold and had to be declared medically unfit for service. β Khaled Fahmy, All the Pasha_s Men_ Mehmed Ali, hisβ¦, 942
