Edwardian horror collapsed the Egyptian and Ottoman Oriental into one interchangeable monster.
Evidence
The monster in The Beetle, who was called “the Oriental,” shared several interesting qualities with the vampire. She transmogrifies into other forms—a man and a monster—just as Dracula changes into a bat, dog, or simply vanishes. This monster, at its most frightening, becomes a large scarab beetle. “The Oriental” crosses into Western territory and, like Dracula, goes on a killing rampage in London. — Sophia Rose Arjana, Muslims in the Western Imagination, 565
Categorization
- DEFINE: ‘The Oriental’ as a named monster figure links the analytical category of the Muslim monster to how popular fiction personified the whole Orient as one menacing body.
- XREF: Ties to the reader’s guiding question on how the image precedes contact: here the scarab/Oriental monster draws on Egyptomania imagery, not real Muslim bodies.
