Each of the three movement currents failed in distinctive ways
Evidence
The electoral/institutional entrists succumbed to illusions about the malleability of the racial state and were forced into a new version of ethnic group pluralism- the idea that racial minorities, like the white ethnics of the past, could claim their rights through “normal” political channels. Marxists (and particularly Marxist-Leninists) could fight racism only by recourse to a futile dogma, and moreover one which consigned race to the terrain of “false consciousness,” while social democrats were reduced to becoming an ineffective appendage of the Democratic Party. Internal colonialism critics, like an earlier generation of black (and other minority) nationalists, refused to recognize the particularities of the U.S. racial order and the limits of all analogies with revolutionary movements abroad. The cultural nationalists ignored the political sphere, and that, of anendto ness of the political race/class/gender system, a recognition oppression itself, brought home by the continued to haunt post-World War II American dreams black movement and and nightmares. — Michael Omi, Howard Winant, Racial Formation in the United States, 174
