Downtown media praised Jones partly by romanticizing his transgressive poses
Evidence
Eberstadt hailed Jones as a poet, critic, dramatist, and celebrity, as well as “a Flaming Seducer [and] a Rabid Racist, who Hates whites, Hates Negroes, Hates homosexuals, Hates intellectuals, Hates liberals.” She made it known that she was riffing (“not all of these statements are true, obviously”) but ample proof might have been found in Jones’s new manifesto “The Revolutionary Theater,” which demanded a theater that “must Accuse and Attack because it is a theater of Victims” (like the male protagonists of Dutchman, The Toilet and The Slave) and his latest poetry collection, The Dead Lecturer, published by Grove Press in October, which included the notorious “Black Dada Nihilismus”: their fathers. — J.
