Downmixing metadata adapts recordings but customers learn nothing of the compromises
Evidence
It seems that current uncertainties relate to how the different configurations of multichannel and immersive audio are downmixed for delivery through different numbers of channels and different streaming services. Metadata is included in recordings describing loudspeaker and channel allocations and positions so that a rendering algorithm can adapt the recording to be compatible with the loudspeaker configuration in the playback system. It is something that technically inclined enthusiasts might be interested in, but in the end, customers are rarely informed about what they are listening to, and what compromises have been made in the delivery process. — Toole, Floyd E, Sound reproduction- the acoustics and…, 865
