Dominican national identity invents indigenous descent to erase African ancestry
Evidence
Creole nationalism in the Dominican Republic is the embodiment of the historical claims to territory by the Spanish campesinos and of a claim to prior ownership by the descendents of Africans. The latter claim has been authenticated through the social invention of descent from the indigenous population of Taino Arawaks whose presence predates European conquest. Nationalism rejects any assertions of rights of belonging by those claiming African ancestry. — David Theo Goldberg, John Solomos, A Companion to Racial and Ethnic Studies, 3211 (
