Diverse ideological factions united to seal apartheid’s fate by the late 1980s
Evidence
Nor should they be confused, as Sanders properly points out, with those, not least intellectuals, equally committed to bringing apartheid to an end. Whether interested in producing a nonracial polity under liberal democratic principles of justice as fairness, a socialist state considerably more equitable for all, or a society fashioned on religious principles of fraternity, anti-apartheid forces combined to oppose the Nationalist government in power. Struggling against intense repression, anti-apartheid became the global cause célèbre. By the later 1980s, trade union and church leaders, artists and musicians, educators and students, politicians and civil rights leaders scrambled to the cause. Official apartheid was doomed. — David Theo Goldberg, The Threat of Race, 1564
