Distribution conflicts directly catalyzed the creation of the Film-Makers’ Cooperative
Evidence
Brakhage won an award, although Anticipation of the Night supposedly caused a riot. Consequently, Amos Vogel—whose Cinema 16 distributed Brakhage’s previous films—declined to take it on. Brakhage angrily refused to give Vogel any of his future films. Their conflict contributed to the forming of the Film-Makers’ Cooperative in early 1962. — J. Hoberman, Everything Is Now, 218
