DFT-based psychoacoustic models derive an auditory excitation spectrum on the ERB scale
Evidence
The most common approach in simple psychoacoustic models is based on the processing involved in loudness perception, as discussed in Section 10.2.5. Here, a discrete Fourier transform (DFT) -based approach is presented, which, instead of actually estimating the loudness, derives an ‘auditory spectrum’ describing the level of cochlear excitation in dB as a function of frequency on the ERB scale. — Ville Pulkki, Matti Karjalainen, Communication Acoustics- An…, 1574
Categorization
- DEFINE: Introduces the ‘auditory spectrum’ — cochlear excitation level dB vs. frequency on the ERB scale — a core operational definition for this chapter’s modelling approach.
- XREF: Relates to signal processing familiarity with the DFT and to the ERB frequency scale from prior chapters on cochlear tuning and auditory filters.
