Detention and deportation regimes discipline the Muslim body through fear
Evidence
In chapter 6, ‘‘The Muslim Body,’’ I examine how social processes are inscribed into, and disciplined on, the immigrant body through the detention and deportation regime and the process of return migration. In doing so, I trace how the Muslim body is constructed through fear and anxiety but also as a site of containment and control. In my ethnographic research, I tracked return migration from the United States to Pakistan as a component of the recent history of detentions and deportations of Muslim immigrants—largely Arab and South Asian—since 2001. I examine how migration creates a site of memory and embodiment of bodily comportment, as well as the role of the racialized a√ect of fear and anxiety on the construction and literal disappearance of the Muslim body in the global War on Terror. — Junaid Rana, Terrifying Muslims, 84 (
