Defeated Ottoman prisoners at Horns were forced to rename their own army as crushed
Evidence
For example, after the battle of Horns on 9 July 1832 against the Ottoman army a large number of Ottoman soldiers were captured by the Egyptians. Also captured and taken prisoner was the chief scribe (muhasebetci) of the “Istanbullite regular army” who was ordered to compile a list of the soldiers and officers captured, all 1,791 of them. When the report was handed in to his captors Mehmed Munib, the Aide-de-Camp of Ibrahim Pasha (his Divan Efendisi), could not accept it because, he said, it was wrongly titled. At the top of the list the Ottoman official had written Asakir-i Mansuremiz Alaylar: “The Regiments of our Victorious Soldiers.” This was supposed to allude to the official title of the new nizami army that Sultan Mahmud II had founded in 1826, Muallem Asakir-i Mansure-i Muhammadiye, “The Trained Victorious Soldiers of Muhammad.” Nevertheless, Mehmed Munib would not allow the word Mansure, Victorious, to be used, and ordered the Ottoman scribe to use the word Makhure, Crushed, instead! — Khaled Fahmy, All the Pasha_s Men_ Mehmed Ali, his…, 958
