Damaged VHS archives encode the Miners Strike as a half-remembered ghost

Evidence

‘It has been in my mind for a while to work on a Scragill/Thatcher project and this is the perfect time for this now as we approach the 25th anniversary of the Miners Strike. A lot has been written elsewhere about this conflict and its outcome and legacy, I have been scouring online and also have picked up some amazing footage to reprocess. It will link closely to The Caretaker in terms of its style as it will be like watching a half remembered version due to the processing. Some of the footage is totally ghostlike as it was recorded on VHS tapes from Miners back in 1984, so there is a real loss in quality and the sound fails to match the visuals. — Mark Fisher, Ghosts of My Life, 254

Categorization

  • BMF: ‘The sound fails to match the visuals’ in degraded VHS footage of 1984 lingers — the way the burial in A Midwife’s Tale’s marginalia or rather the failed-matching media in 2001’s HAL-vs-humans feels adjacent. Actually the stronger echo: the deterioration of media as a proxy for lost futures mirrors how smeared, partially-erased archival presence works in Things Fall Apart’s oral-then-written divide.
