Crusade-era biographies of Muhammad served to characterize the enemy knights faced.
Evidence
Guibert and Adelphus are concerned with the Crusades; both wrote brief prose biographies of Muhammad in order to show the true nature of the Christian knights’ enemies in the Holy Land. Embrico and Gautier wrote much longer lives in verse. — John V. Tolan, Saracens, 781
