Cross-racial cooperation can succeed despite divergent motives and interests
Evidence
This black-white coalition of sorts did not represent a unity of motives and interests on the part of black and white women. Rather, their coalition suggests that divergent motives did not preclude mutual goals. For southern black and northern white women, multiple allegiances and interests overlapped sufficiently to create common ground on which to counter the effects of racial oppression. Just as the last decades of the nineteenth century can be characterized as the nadir of race relations and the era of self-help, they can also be characterized as an age of women’s missions and some interracial cooperation. At the same time that black women joined in concerted efforts with black men, they embarked upon a relationship with white women that had no precedent, and perhaps no sequel. — Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham, Righteous Discontent, 425
