Critical distance from capital has been abolished in postmodern space
Evidence
No theory of cultural politics current on the Left today has been able to do without one notion or another of a certain minimal aesthetic distance, of the possibility of the positioning of the cultural act outside the massive Being of capital, from which to assault this last. What the burden of our preceding demonstration suggests, however, is that distance in general (including “critical distance” in particular) has very precisely been abolished in the new space of Postmodernism. We are submerged in its henceforth filled and suffused volumes to the point where our now postmodern bodies are bereft of spatial coordinates and practically (let alone theoretically) incapable of distantiation; meanwhile, it has already been observed how the prodigious new expansion of multinational capital ends up penetrating and colonizing those very precapitalist enclaves (Nature and the Unconscious) which offered extraterritorial and Archimedean footholds for critical effectivity. — Fredric Jameson, Postmodernism, or, The Cultural Logic…, 158

- QUESTION: If critical distance is abolished for everyone, this is the falsifiability pressure point: how to verify that no position outside capital remains?
- XREF: Resonates with the reader’s whole soundscape/silence project — the desire for an Archimedean foothold outside the noise system parallels critical distance. — connects to: Postmodern architectural disputes are inseparable from capitalist spatial reorganization — Alex Callinicos, Against Postmodernism: A Marxist…, 577; Critical and ideal projection depends on a distance that simulation progressively abolishes. — Jean Baudrillard, Simulacra and Simulation, 394; Human experience becomes capital’s next frontier after geography and nature — Nick Couldry & Ulises A. - DEEPTHINKING: The claim that capital colonizes even Nature and the Unconscious (their own enclaves of critique) is dense enough to sit with: it cuts off every imagined exit.
