Counter-speculative politics blend voting with swipe and scroll rhythms rather than deliberation

Evidence

The spaces of counter-speculation I have sought to chart in this chapter display few such “externalizations.” Most importantly, their defining features are not discursive articulations in the traditional sense of public debate. Rather, I traced them in a more heterogeneous mix of political gestures that blended voting and prefigurative activism with the effervescence of swipes, scrolls, and posts. Nor did such gestures’ potential necessarily emerge in acts of slowing down to cultivate a discursive space like that of traditional liberalism. — Aris Komporozos-Athanasiou, Speculative Communities, 350

Categorization

  • XREF: The claim that radical politics share the temporal form (effervescence, speed) of financialized platforms, not the deliberative slowness of liberalism, connects to previous chapters’ trading-floor-to-dating migration narrative.
  • SEED: The point that radical activism borrows temporal rhythm rather than pace—‘swipes, scrolls and posts’ not as alienation but as the movement’s own tempo—could anchor an essay on whether critique must reject or co-opt platform time.
