Contemporary right-wing politics elevate performativity and white supremacy in schools

Evidence

Freire’s arguments have never been so poignant. With the rise of neoliberal policies elevating concepts of “performativity” (Day & Gu, 2007) and competition to “reform” all parts of the public sector including schools (Anderson & Cohen, 2015, 2018), and, under the Trump Administration, the elevation of white supremacy Coates (2017), xenophobia (Rosa & Bonilla, 2017), and other forms of discrimination in civil society—Freire would have called for resistance of these oppressive forces. — James D.
