Contemporary native informers wear white masks abroad rather than on colonial soil
Evidence
The white masks Fanon identified, however, were donned on the colonial ground, while the masks I identify in this study have made the journey abroad. They are like Mustafa Sa’eed in Tayeb Salih’s 1966 novel Season of Migration to the North, who does not return to Sudan when Great Britain invades Sudan but rather stays in England, looking for a good job and using his knowledge of Arabic and of Africa to tell the British what they want to hear. — Hamid Dabashi, Brown Skin, White Masks, 113
Categorization
- XREF: Directly extends Dabashi’s own 2006 source work on the native informer; also resonates with Mohsin Hamid’s Reluctant Fundamentalist about the expatriate condition.
- FICTION: The Mustafa Sa’eed example from Season of Migration to the North shows the literary archetype of the self-whitewashed expatriate intellectual.
