Containment violence and liberation counter-violence both operate through constraint

Evidence

Representational violence in the more hardened sense serves to humiliate, so to reduce as to make disappear, to be erased in crucial regard, to be rendered invisible. It is the violence that closes out and locks down. The violence of closing down is that of reinforcement, of constraint and containment, of stricture and restriction. There is a counter-violence too, one that undertakes to prise open. The violence that opens up looks to prise apart the restrictive, transgressing the strictures that contain and constrain, violating the reified and the “given.” It offers some sort of possibility where none or little had prevailed or been thought to exist previously (at least not productively). — David Theo Goldberg, The Threat of Race, 1821
