Concept hybrids are named asymmetrically, defaulting to one pole of the pair.

Evidence

Another interesting semantic phenomenon involving concept pairs is which side of the pair is chosen for the hybrid. An important example in this chapter as well as the typology chapter is the concept pair of parliamentary–presidential. So what does one call the hybrid regime? The standard term is “semipresidential.” Another alternative would be to choose the parliamentary side and have “semiparliamentary,” something no one does. — Gary Goertz, Social Science Concepts and Measurement, 1074

Categorization

  • SEED: Essay angle: what the choice of which pole gets carried into the hybrid name reveals about which category is treated as default or unmarked.
  • CANDY: Nobody says ‘semiparliamentary’ — the middle always borrows the stronger-sounding half of the pair.
