Complex numbers conveniently represent coherent sound addition
Evidence
For coherent addition of sources, having to do everything using sines and cosines is very awkward and inconvenient. A better way is to represent the acoustic signals as complex numbers. Complex numbers are pairs of numbers based on the following form: a + jb where j or i represents the −1 . This is called an imaginary number. Consequently, a is called the real part of the pair and b is called the imaginary part. — David M. Howard, Jamie Angus, Acoustics and Psychoacoustics, 246
