Comparing two sound samples requires accurate auditory memory of a timbral identity.

Evidence

Auditory memory is always an issue. How long can we accurately remember a timbral identity for comparison to another? Pike et al. (2014) investigated the effect of auditory memory on loudspeaker ratings made after different quiet intervals between auditory samples. The music samples they used were repeated, beginning and ending before switching, so the listener is comparing the end of the sample with the beginning of the sample after an interval. These are different sounds and audible contrasts are inevitable. β€” Toole, Floyd E, Sound reproduction- the acoustics and…, 98
