Commercial recutting of Godard’s film provoked him to assault a producer onstage.
Evidence
One Plus One had a notably tumultuous premiere at the 1969 London Film Festival. Bowing to commercial considerations, the producers renamed it Sympathy for the Devil and dubbed the song “Sympathy for Devil” over the last sequence, at once undermining the film’s argument that Revolution is a work in progress and distracting from the majestic closing shot in which Eve Democracy (Godard’s wife Anne Wiazemsky) collapses on a camera dolly, which sweeps her up into the sky. In response, Godard assaulted producer Iain Quarrier onstage and suggested that the audience demand a refund. Right on! — J. Hoberman, Everything Is Now, 2022
