Civil dockets span contracts, domestic relations, estates, and government-citizen disputes.
Evidence
Although tort cases are highly publicized, American courts also address many other sorts of civil cases. Some civil cases involve contractual disputes, either between businesses or, more frequently, between a business—usually attempting to collect a debt—and a consumer. Others arise out of domestic relationships, involving such matters as divorce, child support, and adoption. Still others involve the legal transfer of property from one party to another, as occurs through the administration of a will or the handling of the estate of someone who died intestate (without a will). Finally, civil cases may involve the legal relationship between governments and citizens. These cases range from constitutional challenges to governmental actions, such as mandatory drug-testing programs, to governmental suits to compel compliance with environmental regulations, antitrust laws, or other statutes. — G.
