Christian-Muslim coexistence stayed separate, unlike European inter-denominational mingling
Evidence
Even when the two religions shared territory or when Christians lived under Islamic rule, in Spain, Egypt, Syria and Iraq especially, they lived separately, and never intermingled as different denominations intermingle in Europe to-day. Men seem to take it for granted that an alien society is dangerous, if not hostile, and the spasmodic outbreak of warfare between Islam and Christendom throughout their history has been one manifestation of this. — Norman Daniel, Islam and the West, 40
