Christian commentators systematically ignored Muslim explanations of Islamic practices.

Evidence

Perhaps it is not surprising that the Muslim reason for the institution of the fast was lost sight of, or, more often, never known. Only the Cluniacs, Peter the Venerable, and the Annotator from whom he presumably gained his knowledge, mention that the fast marks the Night of Power, laylat al-qadar, on which the Qur’an descended upon Muhammad; and even they did not know that the Night occurs (once) during the fast, but spoke of the descent of the Qur’an, as occurring throughout the thirty nights of the month. — Norman Daniel, Islam and the West, 1234

  • XREF: Corroborates the Anidjar/Aziz/Razack cluster: the West’s ‘Islam’ is a construction that proceeds by silencing Muslim self-understanding — here literally erasing laylat al-qadar.
  • SHARE: For someone into medieval Christian polemics against Islam: even the most accurate single account of Ramadan got the Night of Power wrong.
