Chagossian compensation was small, delayed, and largely consumed by debt

Evidence

After years of protest, including a series of five hunger strikes led by women like Aurélie Talate, Chagossians finally received small amounts of compensation from the British government, ten and fifteen years after the last expulsions. The compensation consisted of small concrete block houses and small plots of land for some of the Chagossians, and money totaling less than $6,000 per adult. Others, including all those living in the Seychelles, received nothing. Many of those who did receive compensation used the money to pay off large debts accrued since the expulsion. For most, conditions improved only marginally. — David Vine, Base Nation_ How U.S. Military Bases…, 219
