Catholics and Jews gained Whiteness only by adopting Anglo-Protestant norms

Evidence

In the case of Catholics and Jews, avoiding a separate racial category allowed them to assert their American identity themselves rather than have Anglo-Saxon Protestants with exclusionary political agendas impose it on them. The newly coined “ethnic Whites” of the post–World War II era faced questions as to whether their religions were compatible with American democracy, mirroring contemporary debates on whether Islam is antidemocratic. Their European ancestry granted them entrance into Whiteness on condition they adopt Anglo-Protestant norms in their lifestyles, associations, and religious practices. — Sahar F.
