Carleill dictated the Tiger’s log to clerk Powell
Evidence
The handwriting is consistent throughout, a somewhat difficult Elizabethan hand. probably that of Edward Powell, who noted on 2 October (see p. 86) that he was taking over from ‘my captain’ the keeping of the record. The captain, who apparently dictated the earlier pages to his clerk, was Christopher Carleill, Drake’s lieutenant general and captain also of the ship Tiger. This identification is established by the use of the personal pronoun I in relation to conferences with Drake and to actions of both Carleill and his ship. — Mary Frear Keeler, Sir Francis Drake’s West Indian Voyage,…, 532
