Capitalism structurally requires excess for some and deprivation for others
Evidence
Dehumanization is not abstract. As the mud from the dead river floods people’s homes, and as the refuse of a society becomes their source of life, dehumanization is tied to material conditions of deprivation because the economic and social structures that shape their material lives require excess for some and deprivation for others. This excess–deprivation dynamic is the nature of capitalism as a socioeconomic structure, and hence, why Marxist critique was so foundational to Freire’s philosophy. — James D. Kirylo (ed.), Reinventing Pedagogy of the Oppressed, 1094
