British wartime leaflets promised Somalia would never return to Italian rule

Before the conference, the SYL CC sent a strongly worded letter to the four-powers council’s foreign ministers (copied to the UN secretary-general) in which it reminded them of the promises made to the Somalis by the British during its offensive against the Italians: “We further have the honour to inform you that the British Government had particularly promised—by manifesto thrown from aeroplanes during the war operations in 1940/1—that Somalia would never return under Italian domination.” — Abdi Ismail Samatar, Africa’s First Democrats, 1207
