British-trained northern officers led an abortive 1961 separatist coup

Evidence

Somalis learned from their leaders that several junior military officers attempted a coup in Hargeisa on December 11. Although the announcement was shocking to the majority of Somalis who cherished unity and independence, elements in the North were saddened by the failure of the coup. This event was not the first sign of discontent among a small number of Northern politicians. Disappointed with their inability to garner the highest positions in the cabinet, they were frustrated by their powerlessness to satisfy their personal ambitions. While none articulated reservations about the unity of the republic, about a month before the attempted coup, anonymous parties in Hargeisa clandestinely distributed flyers in the dead of night calling for the region’s secession from the republic and demanded that Northern MPs resign from their posts. — Abdi Ismail Samatar, Africa’s First Democrats, 624 (#corroborates, via linked claim)

The revolt was led, however, by a group of Sandhurst-trained lieutenants who, after independence, found themselves serving under Italian-trained superior officers who had been posted to the north. Directly inspired, it seems, by a mixture of personal ambition and northern patriotism, these British-trained junior officers quietly arrested their southern superiors whom they regarded as unjustly promoted over their heads. They then gave out publicly that, following widespread rioting against the government in Mogadishu and elsewhere, General Da’ud, commandant of the national army, had assumed control of the state. — I.M.
