British administration doubled Somali school enrolment within a few years

Evidence

Modest advances were also achieved in education. When the British Military Administration assumed control of Somalia, it found in operation thirteen state-aided Italian mission schools providing some elementary education for Somalis and Italians. By 1947 nineteen government elementary schools had been opened, notwithstanding the difficulties of recruiting qualified teaching staff in this period. There were also three private schools, and a teachers’ training centre for Arabs and Somalis with an average enrolment of fifty students. Thus, though education was still pitifully inadequate both in standards and extent, the number of children (still almost entirely boys) attending school had doubled since before the war. — I.M.
