Brain structures supporting sound perception become harder to observe near the cortex
Evidence
There are, for example, places in the ascending neural pathway where neurons from the left and right cochleae are cross-connected. Elsewhere and particularly closer to the centers in the brain, structures are difficult to observe, and there may well be little direct evidence of specific structure to support proposed perceptual strategies. — David M.
