Boers supposedly trekked away to escape British liberal racial policies
Evidence
The usual account of South African historiography has the boers representing the ancien régime of old-style racism, thinking of indigenous Africans as radically inferior, even less or non-humans, totally devoid of intelligence, skill, or the possibility of their acquisition. The boers on this view thus trekked away as much to free themselves of British liberalism vis-à -vis the indigenous as to secure their own freedom from grating British rule and regulation.
