BMLD magnitude fluctuates wildly with signal timing within a noise burst
Evidence
Thresholds of the 12-ms test-tone burst show large variations as a function of time, and the variations for lv1oSo are larger than those for lv1oS rr . The variations of the two t.hreshold curves as a function of time seem to show no correlation. Therefore, the result.ing BMLDs range from 3 dB to 20 dB. This means that the BMLD varies strongly a’l a function of time. When using long tone bursts, some form of averaging seems to take place. For a test-tone duration of 300 ms, this leads to a threshold of 59 dB for MoSo and of 45 dB for AloS rr . The corresponding BMLD would be 14 dB comparable to that of the individual medians, which result in an average of 12 dB. — Professor Dr.-Ing. Hugo Fastl, Professor Dr.-Ing. - QUESTION: Why do MoSo and MoSrr threshold variations show no correlation? This seems to hint at separate binaural processing mechanisms for So versus S-pi conditions that deserve deeper investigation.
