Black theater casts demanded all-Black crews as a condition of performance in 1968.

Evidence

The actors had threatened a strike on opening night unless all whites were removed from the stage crew. Their demand was denied. The cast did not refuse to perform; neither did they join the opening night party. Slave Ship ran at BAM for over seven weeks then moved to Washington Square Methodist Church on West Fourth Street. — J. Hoberman, Everything Is Now, 1506
