Black students choose HBCUs for seeing themselves represented as achievers
Evidence
Darien learned of Morehouse after reading a small article about one of its most famous alums, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He decided to visit the school. “What captured me about Morehouse was the setting. Just seeing black men doing something important,” he told me. “Whether it was singing in the glee club; whether it was wearing suits to interview for some big internship. As soon as I got on campus, I saw that and I was like, ‘Wow, why don’t I know about this?’ ” He turned down the basketball scholarships and attended Morehouse instead. — Eddie S.
