Black ministers fused humility with assertive Christian manhood without contradiction

Evidence

The writings of black Baptist ministers admitted no contradiction in encouraging humility and self-sacrifice while at the same time applauding “Christian manhood.” In the anthology The Negro Baptist Pulpit, Edward McKnight Brawley praised the sacrificial attitude of missionaries to the South in the same breath as he shouted: “Contend for the faith!” In the 1890s Charles Octavius Boothe of Alabama commended the present wave of “charitable and self abasing” men over the older style of arrogant, boastful leaders. — Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham, Righteous Discontent, 666
